The Hudson River School of Music
A community-based after-school music school for violin, viola and cello
for children in preschool through high school (ages 4-18) located in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
Founded in 1968 by Hastings residents Ikuku Okaya and Pearl Bloom, the school was the first in the Northeast to provide instruction by Japanese violin teachers trained by Shinichi Suzuki. At the heart of Suzuki's philosophy is the idea that a child does not need innate talent to learn to play and enjoy a musical instrument. Our school continues today to be inspired by Suzuki's ideas and methods. Children of all abilities progress steadily, using the Suzuki method, which teaches, through an aural approach, new elements in small increments. The Hudson River School of Music is a parent cooperative and parents are welcome to participate in all aspects of the school.
As a non-profit organization, it does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational programs, admissions policies, loan programs, and other school-administered programs.

"Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart." Shinichi Suzuki 1898-1998 |
